EARS & BALANCE DISORDER

The ability to maintain balance is an automatic body function that we take for granted until illness or injury occurs. We maintain our balance with the coordination of our eyes, our sense of touch, and our vestibular system, located in the inner ear.

The vestibular system is comprised of two organs, known as otolithic organs and three semicircular canals next to the ears. The canals are fluid-filled chambers that are lined with hair cells containing nerve sensors.

When we move, the movement of fluid in the canals stimulates these hair cells. A signal is then transmitted to the brain where it is interpreted as movement. The brain also receives information from the eyes and the sense of touch. All three parts of the balance system must communicate the same information to the brain in order to maintain good balance. If one of these systems reports conflicting information to the brain, the result may be dizziness .

HEARING

Sounds are formed any time an object creates vibrations. These vibrations travel through the air, just as ripples travel across water. Hearing begins when the vibrations reach the outer ear, which functions as a funnel, collecting these sound vibrations and directing them toward the eardrum.

As sound vibrations are picked up by the ear drum, they are transferred to a series of three tiny bones in the middle ear. These bones further amplify the vibrations of the eardrum, and transfer them to a sensory organ in the inner ear, called the cochlea. The inside of the cochlea is filled with fluid, and lined with tens of thousands of tiny hair cells. As vibrations pass through the fluid, it causes movement of these hair cells. This motion causes electrical signals to be sent along a specialized nerve, which are then processed into the sounds we hear.

FACIAL & PLASTIC SURGERY

Rhinoplasty: Plastic surgery of the nose is one of the most gratifying and rewarding surgeries for patients. Changing the appearance of the nose involves recontouring the cartilage and bone of the nose while maintaining or improving the breathing function of the nose. Both men and women who have attained full growth are candidates for this procedure. Generally, there is a preoperative consultation that involves a discussion on desired changes, photographs, and computer imaging showing likely results. The procedure can be performed along with internal nasal surgery to improve the breathing function of the nose. Rhinoplasty is usually performed as outpatient surgery and most patients can return to their daily activities within one week and exercise within four weeks

NOSE, SINUS & ALLERGY

Those people suffering from allergy, daily life can be a struggle.  Allergy symptoms range from mild annoyances, to severe and life-threatening reactions. Allergy sufferers may even experience symptoms, such as frequent colds, sinus infections, and skin rashes, without realizing that the symptoms are caused by allergies. In addition to the annoyance and discomfort associated with allergy symptoms, many sufferers find that they are forced to avoid situations where their allergies may be triggered.

Picture missing your daughter's first base hit. Or imagine your child being unable to go fishing with grandparents. Many suffers must withdraw from former hobbies, or avoid friends and family, with the onset of allergies. Fortunately, treatment methods are available which can alleviate allergies, or put them in long-term remission. If allergies affect you, or someone you love, speak with your healthcare provider today, to learn more about the various treatment methods.

OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA SYNDROME

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious disorder, in which breathing during sleep repeatedly becomes too shallow, or stops altogether.  The most common type of sleep apnea is called obstructive sleep apnea, and occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat relax during sleep.  When the muscles relax, the airway narrows or closes, and breathing momentarily stops.  If you think you might have sleep apnea, talk to your doctor immediately.
