He has been a pioneer in developing minimal invasive surgery in this part of country and has conducted several workshops in numerous remote areas of the north eastern region and has trained young gynecologist s in the field which has helped in reducing the problem of human infertility in the respective regions and the northeast as a whole.
Way back in 1997, with the motive of popularizing total lap hysterectomy Dr. Sharma had conducted an Indo-Australian workshop at Jorhat in collaboration with Prof. Peter Maher, which was attended by many gynecologist from north eastern region as well as other parts of India. During the course of his service he even developed a team of Gynaecologist, Embryologists, Laparoscopic surgeons and also felt that the need of the hour in the region was to develop a centre dedicated towards Women and Child care.
Thus in the year 2007, he established the landmark achievement of his career, “PRATIKSHA” a 50 bedded hospital specialized in In-vitro fertilization, Minimal invasive surgery and neonatal care. The IVF centre of the hospital attracted patients not only from the northeastern region but also from rest of the country and abroad. Hence, the concept of Reproductive tourism was materialised, which did not seem like realistic goal, till a few decades back, at least not in the context of the region. Today PRATIKSHA hospital does around 1000 to 1200 cycles of IVF annually with a success rate of 40 - 45% and is considered as one of the most successful centres in India.
In 2008 he delivered the first surrogate baby of north east for a NRI couple.
In 2009 the first baby through the method of Frozen Blastocyst Transfer was born, under Dr.Sharma’s initiative.
Dr. Sharma knew that a baby is the ultimate source of happiness for any woman as motherhood is inherent in all women and it is the most beautiful feeling in the universe. But high neonatal mortality rates due to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), preterm delivery, pre-mature low birth weight, multiple pregnancy were obstacles to this human desire; hence to overcome this he established a fully equipped advanced neonatal care unit which is manned by a very efficient team of doctors and nurses. This unit has successfully saved many highly premature babies as early as 28 weeks weighing as less as 600gms. It also has the facility of safely transferring unhealthy babies from the periphery.
PRATIKSHA hospital is recognised by the Government of Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Bhutan, and Manipur as their referral centre for treating infertile couples. PRATIKSHA hospital conducts training programs in Ultrasound, ART and Minimal Invasive Surgery regularly and has successfully trained more than 200 doctors. During this course Dr. Sharma realised that the region was lacking in good nursing services and hence was facing a lack of good nursing staff; as a solution to this he started the “Pratiksha School of Nursing” in 2011 which has been recognised by the Indian Nursing Council.
The response from patients from abroad and the rest of the country has encouraged Dr. P.K.Sharma to start his dream project in the name of “W PRATIKSHA HOSPITAL”, a 100 bedded Women and Child Multi-speciality hospital, Gurgaon, Haryana which is operational since 8 March 2015.
He has also plans to start a chain of IVF centers across India. As a part of this project, an IVF centre at Kolkata at Kolkata is operational since 2017.
What is remarkable is that Dr. Sharma has made his services available even to the people of lower socio-economic strata, by providing his services at subsidized rates and by running 50 IVF cycles annually free of cost.
In the last twenty years through his endeavours more and more infertile couples from interior parts of North east are now able to avail infertility treatment, which was earlier available outside the region or outside the country. By his training programme for young gynecologists he is continuously developing human resource in this field and in the present day they do not have to go abroad for training in IVF which is a costly and time consuming affair. He envisions PRATIKSHA as an institute of excellence in Women and Child healthcare in the near future. He wants to develop PRATIKSHA as an at par institution with the best medical institutes in the world like John Hopkins, Cambridge etc. Thus with this vision, determination and humble hope Dr. P.K.Sharma continues to serve the masses and helps them becomes a family from a couple.
